Sony Ericsson Open – Day 4 & 5 Coverage

Press Conference (Day 4)

Day 5 – Vs. Diego Junqueira

Andy cruised in his first round of the Sony Ericsson Open with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Diego Junqueira. Under the lights on Key Biscayne, Andy took stadium court wearing his signature black Lacoste polo. He quickly claimed the momentum of the set breaking Diego twice for a commanding 5-1 lead. Despite a relatively low first serve percentage, Andy still fired four aces and clinched the first set 6-1 in under a half an hour.

His dominating night at the office continued when Andy immediately broke the Argentine in the opening game of the second set for 1-0. With his calm determination, Andy’s blitz continued as he held for 2-0. Andy was in complete control as he powered for yet another break at love to surge to 3-0. The one sided affair continued when Andy held comfortably for 4-0.

With a hopeful applause for the underdog, fans cheered along Diego as he got on the board by holding his serve at 4-1. Andy, however, wasn’t going to give the fans in Key Biscayne a closer match, and he quickly served his way to 5-1.

The final game of the set was by far the most exciting brining the stadium to a standing ovation several times. Diego stumbled on his serve, double faulting his chance to seal the game. Andy patiently rallied with the Argentine to earn several match points. A net cord and Hawkeye challenge saved Diego on two separate occasions. Andy steered the course wearing down Diego, and finally the Argentine fired a forehand wide, landing Andy in the next round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in less than an hour.

Next, Andy faces Dmitry Tursunov. Check back to Ar.com for more updates from the Sony Ericsson Open.

We Support Andy!

We’ve had an out-pouring of emails following the news of Andy’s boycott defending his title at the Dubai Tennis Championships. It’s ofcourse following the denial of entry to a female Israli player.

“I really didn’t agree with what went on over there. I don’t know if it’s the best thing to mix politics and sports, and that was probably a big part of it.”

Roddick falls to Federer

Roger Federer was at his imperious best as he reached his 18th grand slam final with a straight sets victory over Andy Roddick at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Roddick celebrates reaching his 18th grand slam final after his superb victory over Andy Roddick.

The world number two had too much power for seventh seed Roddick, taking just two hours 17 minutes to defeat the American 6-2 7-5 7-5 and book a place in the final against either top seed Rafael Nadal or Fernando Verdasco.

The victory means Federer is now just one away from Ivan Lendl’s all-time record of 19 grand slam final appearances.

“It’s just great to be playing here — it’s fun out there,” a delighted Federer told the official tournament Web site. “If I can break records, too, then that’s great.”

Roddick has only ever beaten Federer in two of their previous 17 meetings — the most recent success coming in Miami last year — and he never looked like repeating that in a match played with the Rod Laver Arena roof open following a drop in temperature which brought to an end the extreme heat policy procedures.

A hustling Roddick tried everything from drop shots to bullet-like serves to find a way through the Federer armory. Although there were times when the three-time Australian Open champion could only stand and watch the aces go by or send a drop shot return into the net, he largely had an answer for everything Roddick could send his way.

The second seed took the lead for the first time in the third game of the opening set when he reached a well-placed volley by Roddick and fired a down the line winner back past his unbelieving opponent.

Roddick had a break-point opportunity in the next game but failed to take it and he was made to pay dearly for that in the fifth when Federer broke him again then comfortably held serve for a 5-1 lead.

Federer found the net a couple of times in the next game to help Roddick hold his serve but it did not stop Federer taking the first set. The Swiss, chasing a record-equalling 14th grand slam title, had a few nervy moments as he held off two break points before a wide reply by Roddick handed him the game and the set.

The second set was far closer with break point chances few and far between. But just when it appeared to be heading for a tie-break, Roddick was broken in the 11th game when he had a failed attempt at a volley then Federer hit a blistering winner down the line after looking seemingly out of the point, before the American found the net again. Federer then held his serve to love to wrap up the second set.

It was almost an exact repeat in the third set, although Federer did have the chance to break clear in the fifth game. Roddick was given a code violation for swearing but he produced an audacious sliced backhand to help him on his way to holding his serve.

The break eventually came in the 11th game and Federer served for the match which he sealed with a down the line winner.

Photos from the game & from the past rounds will be added later today. Apologies for delays, it’s been hectic outside of the site!

Andy advances to third round!

Andy Roddick has advanced to the third round at the Australian Open.

The seventh-seeded American, trying to win a second Grand Slam title to add to his 2003 U.S. Open championship, beat qualifier Xavier Malisse of Belgium 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (1), 6-2.

Malisse, a former top 20 player now ranked No. 195, played strongly over most of the first three sets but appeared deflated by his lopsided tiebreaker loss in the third.

Roddick will face French veteran Fabrice Santoro in the third round.

Roddick excells in first round!

Andy Roddick, looking sharp and trim, committed just 10 unforced errors in a 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 win over 31-year-old Swedish qualifier Bjorn Rehnquist.

Roddick was happy to be first up in Rod Laver Arena as temperatures rose steadily. He sped off in less than two hours, taking advantage of Rehnquist, whose style played right into the seventh-seeded American’s strengths.

“He’s probably not going to do much to kind of blow you off the court,” said Roddick, who lost only nine points in the first set. “But you got to go and execute. I was able to do that.”

Well done Andy! We’ve added 50 photos from the match to the photo galleries, so check them out!
