Television ratings drop for finals
The overnight TV ratings for both U.S. Open singles finals dropped from last year.

The men’s final, in which Roger Federer beat Novak Djokovic, drew a 4.2 overnight rating on CBS on Sunday, down from a 5.1 for Federer against Andy Roddick in 2006.

Federer comment at U.S. Open misread by Roddick
There is no taking Wednesday night’s Roger Federer-Andy Roddick late match out of context: It was a duel to gush over, wonderfully played and tightly contested, fully living up to a U.S. Open tradition of stirring quarterfinal night events.

But an on-court, postmatch interview with the victorious Federer, which included USA Network announcer Michael Barkann’s maladroit observation on the Arthur Ashe Stadium public address system that Federer’s training regimen is “a piece of cake,” threatened to cast developments in an entirely wrong light.

Especially because Roddick heard Federer’s off-hand agreement (said sarcastically), “Yeh, piece of cake,” before Roddick reported to his required post-match news conference.
